Item Specifics:
Featured Refinements : Vintage Bicycle Speedometer Color : Black
Modified Item : No Country/Region of Manufacture : France
Year : 1984 Brand : Huret
Description* :
This is a nice, relatively rare example of one of the most elaborate bike speedometer designs that huret ever made for themselves: a round design with a dual-scale dial, stamped gold numbering, chrome trim, a black crinkle-finish texture coating, and an optional, removable black rubber lens shroud. A barely-legible datestamp on the upper right of the back case shows that it was made on the 8th week of 1984.This design was mostly found on mopeds, but this example is configured for a bicycle. It is actually the same unit as that of the schwinn approved speedometer 08 430 or the sting-ray speedometer 08 431 (complete with the same mounting bracket), but this version was made by huret for their own brand, with a unique black dial and pointer design, plus an optional black rubber lens shroud. When originally found, it had seized up after 45 years, but it has now had a full cleaning and rebuild, and is in full working order. It's compatible with the same drive hubs and drive cables used on all the other huret-made schwinn approved or sting-ray speedometers. (See my other auctions for some examples of those.)Without the rubber lens shroud installed, the speedometer head is about 2¼" in diameter and 1½" deep (plus the drive cable connection in back). Add the black rubber hood, and it's about 2¾" in diameter and 2" deep. It has a polished chrome rim, glass face, and painted steel housing, with white numbers on the inner scale (kmh), stamped gold numbers on the outer scale (mph), and a black dial with red pointer. (The black lens shroud is a really tight fit, and installs from the back with the mounting bracket removed, so you should probably decide at installation time if you want to use it or not.)All chrome parts were polished and waxed while it was disassembled, and the glass was cleaned on both sides. The black textured crinkle finish was showing some wear and chipping, so i gave it a respray of the correct semigloss black shade. The handlebar mounting clamp is the same chrome... Read More
